Product Description

Cold-pressed milk thistle oil (Silybum marianum) is a pale golden-yellow oil with a mild, slightly nutty character. It is distinguished from most vegetable oils by its relatively high content of natural silymarin compounds — a group of flavonolignans retained in trace quantities in the oil fraction of the seed. This, combined with a high linoleic acid content (50–60%) and an exceptionally rich natural vitamin E (tocopherol) profile, places milk thistle oil among the more bioactively complex speciality oils available.

The fatty acid composition of milk thistle oil is broadly similar to conventional sunflower oil — linoleic-dominant — but the combination of its silymarin trace fraction and elevated tocopherol content makes it of interest for functional food formulation, dietary supplement development, and high-value cosmetic applications where antioxidant-rich carrier oils are required.

We cold-press this oil at below 40°C to preserve the heat-sensitive tocopherol and silymarin fraction. Due to its high polyunsaturated fat content, the oil requires protection from light and heat. Full COA including fatty acid profile, peroxide value, and tocopherol content is available with each batch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cold-pressed milk thistle oil contains trace silymarin compounds that migrate into the oil fraction during pressing. Concentrations are lower than in the seed or flour, but measurable. If silymarin quantification in the oil is required for your application, please request this at inquiry stage and we will arrange HPLC analysis.
Both are linoleic-dominant oils with broadly similar fatty acid profiles. Milk thistle oil is distinguished by its higher natural tocopherol content and the presence of silymarin-derived bioactives. It is positioned as a specialty functional oil rather than a commodity cooking oil.
Due to its high linoleic acid content, milk thistle oil is susceptible to oxidation. Store in cool (below 15°C), dark conditions and keep containers sealed. Recommended shelf life is 12 months from production date when stored correctly.
